Uralla Shire comes together to celebrate Youth Week
Youth Week is an annual opportunity to host events which invite the involvement of and celebrate the contributions of young people across the Shire.
The theme for Youth Week 2021 was ‘Together more than ever’ and it ran from 16 – 24 April.
This year’s program began with a Family Fun Day at Alma Park and ended with a Disco at the Uralla Neighbourhood Centre.
The Mayoral Morning Tea was well attended on Wednesday with 18 representatives from local schools. These young ambassadors spoke about the opportunities they saw to improve life in Uralla Shire, as well as the aspects that they valued about life in their community in regional NSW.
Topics discussed include parks, open spaces and sporting facilities, support for young people facing the pressures of the teenage years, local roads and the challenges of learning to drive, the latter which will form part of a submission to the Parliament of New South Wales Joint Standing Committee on Road Safety.
“I deeply value the opportunity to meet with young representatives and to hear first-hand their experiences and ideas,” said Uralla Shire Council Mayor Michael Pearce.
“This feedback also informs the way we approach different projects and services as a Council,” Mayor Pearce said.
Addressing the attendees at Wednesday’s Morning Tea, Mayor Pearce said, “You are our future leaders – among us may be a future mayor, or premier of NSW.”
Other activities during the week include a mother and daughter mosaic workshop at McCrossin’s Mill, a Teen Macrame Workshop held at the Trader’s Store and a water-themed treasure hunt co-ordinated by ZNET Uralla.
