Uralla Library launches initiative to deliver books to Shire newborns

The Uralla Shire Library has partnered with Child and Family Health Nursing Services to provide free ‘Baby Book packs’ to all newborns in the Uralla Shire.
Council is pleased to announce a new partnership between the Uralla Shire Library and Hunter New England Health - Child and Family Health Nursing Services, which provides baby books free of charge to families with newborns to encourage family reading and develop language and reading skills from an early age.
The packs, put together by Uralla Library staff, contain a board book by Australian author Mem Fox, along with information on the benefits of reading to babies and young children.
A junior library membership form is also included in the pack to make it easy for families to sign up for their child’s first free library membership.
The ‘Baby Book packs’ will be delivered to local families by the Hunter New England Health - Child and Family Health Nursing Services staff.
Uralla Shire Council Mayor, Cr Michael Pearce said he was excited about the new initiative.
“We are pleased to be working in partnership with the NSW child and family health nursing services to provide these free baby book packs to local families.”
“There is a wealth of evidence that children benefit from being read aloud to,” Cr Pearce said.
“Being read to is an important part of every child’s development of language and learning, not to mention the enjoyment of families spending that precious time together.”
“Council and the Uralla Library want to encourage families to share special reading time with their newborns every day. We hope the Baby Book packs will make it that much easier to start.”
