Uralla Shire Council is collaborating with Shoalhaven City Council to explore opportunities for affordable housing, with Uralla Shire Council staff visiting an emerging housing project this week to learn from Shoalhaven’s experience.

Shoalhaven Council has been providing valuable insights into its partnership with community housing provider Southern Cross Housing, which is delivering 39 long-term affordable dwellings in Bomaderry. The project, made possible through Council’s provision of land, serves as a model for how local government can support housing solutions.

Recognising the growing need for affordable housing in the New England region, Uralla Shire Council began investigating potential opportunities last year and sought guidance from Shoalhaven Council on navigating the process.

“Councils have an important role to play in addressing housing affordability, whether through planning measures, advocacy, or partnerships,” said Uralla Shire Council General Manager Toni Averay.

“Shoalhaven’s experience has been incredibly valuable in shaping our understanding of what’s possible for our Shire. Their team has been generous in sharing their expertise, which helps us move forward with confidence,” Ms Averay said.

Shoalhaven Council’s Acting CEO, James Ruprai, welcomed the opportunity to collaborate with Uralla Shire.

“The provision of land for the delivery of affordable housing is one of the ways Councils can play a role in boosting housing opportunities for residents with low or moderate incomes,” said acting Shoalhaven Council CEO James Ruprai.

The Draft Local Housing Strategy for Uralla Shire is on exhibition until 28 April 2025, and Uralla Shire Council is seeking community feedback to help provide a framework for housing supply within the Shire. Residents are encouraged to have their say by completing the online survey , attending the community briefing session on Thursday 3 April 2025 or by contacting council on 02 6778 6300 or council@uralla.nsw.gov.au
