Bushcare Volunteer Group
Do you like being out in the bush? Would you like to help native wildflowers and wildlife?
Our volunteer bush regenerators provide valuable work to help maintain a rich diversity of native grasses and wildflowers in Uralla’s bushland reserves. Volunteers regularly help Council manage the Mt Mutton reserve and may occasionally help in other bushland reserves.
Most of our work is carefully stopping invasive weeds growing among the native plants while we chat. The grassy woodland ecosystem does most of the work. Native plants regenerate naturally, providing food and habitat for insects, birds and other wildlife to thrive.
No prior knowledge or skills are needed – just ability to walk on uneven ground and use your hands and eyes. You will learn to recognise some of the plants and discover interesting and beautiful details about nature in Uralla.
What our volunteers say
“A sense of community, gentle weeding and chatting with like-minded people (nothing too onerous), having a knowledgeable person to explain about the flora and fauna and most importantly, being outside enjoying nature.” - Marion
“I enjoy bushcare on Mondays for many reasons, but my favourite is that I’m allowed to hand weed in preference to using chemicals. I’m also learning lots about the bush and little natives from Kate. It has made me look more kindly on my own patch and I’m enjoying the little things that are coming back into it.” - Lesley
"Arriving seven years ago we wanted to meet other people who lived in Uralla; to become part of the village. As we enjoy nature, the Mount Mutton Bush care group was the choice we made. To assist in eradicating pest weeds and to see the native plants regenerate is very satisfying. Combined with learning which are native species and identifying the pests, together looking for the various wild life that live on the reserve." - Darron
